This year's recipient of the SPEAQ Board of Directors award is the Concordia TESL unit
in the Department of Education. It was very difficult to single out just one professor or
part-time instructor from Concordia's TESL team for it is the group's passion, continued

Gary McIntyre Boyd 1934 - 2011
Dr. Gary Boyd tragically passed away on April 3, 2011.
He died peacefully in his sleep. Our loss is great and deep Gary was, above all else, a humanitarian.
His re-occurring theme was people helping people via social change, discourse, art and all other forms of good human expression. Gary spoke of these imperatives through his theory, but he also practiced them with consummate thought, gentleness, and wit. He was universally loved and admired.

Dr. Helena Osana
"Some Math Symbols are more = than others"
In this Concordia Journal article, Dr. Helena Osana discusses her involvement in a three-year research program funded by SSHRCC examining elementary school mathematics. More specifically, Dr. Osana's team is looking at students' misunderstanding of the equal sign, and how it affects their ability to solve non-standard problems.

The Comité d'agrément des programmes de formation &aagrave; l'enseignement (CAPFE) will be at Concordia University on May 16 and 17, 2011. It will examine the teacher education programs in order to determine if they adequately meet ministerial orientations and the development of the professional competencies of future teachers.

"Award"
David Waddington was a member of a team of scholars who won a competition to put
together a special issue of Educational Theory, a leading journal in the field
of philosophy of education. The theme of the issue will be
"Plural Societies and the Possibility of a Shared Moral Vision:
Contemporary Philosophical Perspectives."
Dr. Waddington will work together with scholars from McGill, UQTR, and
Université de Montréal to write an article on interculturalism
and religious schooling in Québec for the special issue.
The issue will be put together at the third annual Educational Theory
Summer Institute, to be held at the University of Illinois in August 2011.

English Placement Test - Extra Dates
This test is required for students applying to the B. Ed. and Certificate in TESL.
The test is offered on a drop-in basis on January 28, 2011 and February 18, 2011 between 2 and 6pm. You can come any time between those hours. Please bring an ID that has a picture on it. Location: LB-548, 1400 de Maisonneuve west 5th floor.

Arpi Hamalian
For the second year in a row the Mayor has declared October to be "Women's History Month." Arpi Hamalian coordinated a one day colloquium at Concordia with a group of Colleagues from Concordia and other Montreal area universities and organizations: Women and the Arts during the Quiet Revolution. The event took place on October 16, 2010. On October 20, Madame Helen Fotopoulos organized a reception at City Hall for the conference committee members and invited us to sign the gold book in commemoration of the event. [Photo 1], [Photo 2]

Paul Bouchard
Paul Bouchard presented an hour-long lecture to a group of over 300 participants in 12 countries, for the National Research Council of Canada's MOOC (Massive Online Open Course) on "Critical literacies".
He talked about the new networked learning environments's potential for connected learning, while discussing some of the power differential issues that emerge because of some "natural" properties of networks. Congratulations to Laura Collins nd her colleagues Pavel Trofimovich, Joanna White, Walcir Cardoso and Marlise Horst who were named as the 2010 recipients of the ACTFL-ML J Paul Pimsleur Award for their recently published article in the Modern Language Journal.
