Going old school with new digital classrooms is vital

According to PhD candidate Tieja Thomas, "It may seem counterintuitive, but today’s students see traditional lectures as extremely important elements of a good class." Her collegue Jihan Rabah agrees, "Yes, students like technology, and yes, they want it in the classroom — but they still want classical instruction." Both contributed to an article and co-edited the special issue of the International Journal of Technologies in Higher Education based on research by Associate Professor Vivek Venkatesh.

In her 40 years at Concordia, Arpi Hamalian has contributed in numerous ways to the university. She has served as chair of the Department of Education, director of the graduate programs in both Educational Studies and Adult Education, and principal of the Simone de Beauvoir Institute. Arpi talks about teachers who taught her to love learning, women who inspired her, and how women must pay attention to preserving gains made by women, and learn to address structural and systemic barriers.

Grimposium: Trve Kvlt Arts, Films, Sounds and Texts in Extreme Metal

Organised by Vivek Venkatesh (Associate Professor of Eduational Technology), Grimposium is Vivek's ode to the extreme metal scene - a ritual offering to the men and women who define, redefine and stretch the artistic boundaries of what this niche scene has become. Held at the de Sève cinema at Concordia University on April 11 and 12, 2014 and featuring key members of the global extreme metal scene including filmmakers, musicians, journalists, visual artists, authors, creative writers, musicologists and academics. The event will feature film screenings, book launches, panel sessions, art exhibitions and much, much more.

Department of Education is moving to The Faubourg

Scheduled for Spring-Summer 2015, the Department of Education will be relocating to The Faubourg as the transformation and expansion of the R. Howard Webster library gains momentum. Endorsed by a clear majority of the department council, department chair Richard Schmid admits he was hesitant about the space meetings the needs of the department but is pleased at the receptivity and creativity of Facilities Management to address the challenges raised. Schmid also embraces the opportunity for the department to custom design their space.

Women Faculty Summit discusses opportunities for change

Organized by the Office of the Provost, the Summit held on February 14 brought together 40 full- and part-time women faculty to discuss questions such as What is Concordia doing right when it comes to supporting women faculty members? What are some of the challenges? And in the next five years, what changes would women like to see happen? On the topic of gender equality, Department of Education faculty Adeela Arshad-Ayaz commented: "the gender equality project is still far from finished," and added that one of the greatest obstacles women faculty contend with is the false belief they have achieved parity with men. Another summit is planned later this year.

Moving Up! Department of Education rises to Top 100 in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2014

Steadily stepping up yet again from last year's ranking in the Top 150, the Department of Education now boasts of a rank in the Top 100. The QS World University Rankings by Subject are based on several factors including academic reputation, a survey of employers and citations per faculty. Launched in 2011, these rankings are an outgrowth of the QS World University Rankings, published annually since 2004. The expanded version aims to give future students an immediate understanding of which universities perform the best across 30 different subjects. Read more about QS World University Rankings

Concordia Ed Tech alumni and former Vice-Rector, Academic appointed to the Order of Canada

Concordia alumnus and former vice-rector John Daniel has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada — the country’s top civilian honour recognizing outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. His storied career includes 340 publications, such as Mega-Universities and Knowledge Media: Technology Strategies for Higher Education (Kogan Page, 1996) and Mega-Schools, Technology and Teachers: Achieving Education for All (Routledge, 2010). Daniel served as Concordia's vice-rector (academic) from 1980 to 1984 and earned his Masters in Educational Technology at Concordia in 1996. Read more

An Academic Quest into Black and Death Metal

As a young man looking for a philosophy, he discovered that "metal helped transcend racial barriers," explains Associate Professor Vivek Venkatesh about the start of his conflicted love affair with black metal. Years later, Venkatesh sought to explore how communities of metal fans interact in online forums, and how those communities function. "There is empirical data that people form and rationalize arguments in a different way in online forums." Soon enough, Venkatesh began making waves with his thesis, titled From Pride to Prejudice to Shame: Multiple Facets of the Black Metal Scene Within and Without Online Environments. He talks to The Gazette about his background as a lifelong metalhead. Read more

Tackling High School Drop-Out Rates

The future of education in Quebec just got a little brighter. A team of researchers with the university’s Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance (CSLP) has recently upgraded an online tool that facilitates both learning and teaching. Known as the Electronic Portfolio Encouraging Active and Reflective Learning, or ePEARL, the bilingual online software encourages self-regulated learning in students from kindergarten through high school. It provides electronic tools that allow students to take control of and evaluate their own learning and behaviour. Read more

Lurking Undercurrents of Xenophobia in Black Metal Niche Communities

Associate Professor Vivek Venkatesh sheds light on the dark side of black metal in a chapter appearing in a forthcoming peer-reviewed book Educational, Psychological, and Behavioral Considerations in Niche Online Communities. His research into the proliferation of xenophobia in online blogs and forums by black metal scene members can serve as a cautionary tale for society at large of how otherwise self-contained racist chatter could influence the larger public to consider adopting racist ideologies.

ACFAS 2014 at Concordia University - Join a new community

Associate Professor David Waddington talks about his experiences at Acfas as Concordia gears up for the largest multidisciplinary gathering of knowledge and research in the French-speaking world. "Acfas is a little smaller than most conferences I normally attend, but there is an advantage to that. In my case, it helped me meet people in my field that I might not have been able to connect with at a larger event [...] It helped me make connections with francophone academics in Quebec, which is important. There is a divide between academics from English and French Canada, and participating in Acfas is an excellent way to bridge this gap." Read more

Research Seminar - Dr. Maria Bannert

Held on September 26, at 6pm in LB553-2. Dr. Maria Bannert presents "Freedom to choose or freedom to fail: How could we support self-regulated eLearning by means of metacognitive scaffolds?". Research in the field of self-regulated learning points to the crucial role of learners’ strategic and metacognitive behaviour. Thus, successful learning is not a matter of trial and error, but depends on the nature and sequencing of metacognitive activities that need to be enacted, such as analysing, planning, monitoring, and evaluating. However, research also reveals that many students have difficulties in performing these metacognitive activities spontaneously, in effect resulting in lower learning outcomes. The key purpose of Dr. Bannert's recent research is to find appropriate scaffolding for metacognitive reflection when learning with modern computer-based learning environments. Read more

Associate Professor Vivek Venkatesh studies the impact of social media on the development of individual and social identities in the global extreme metal scene. At the Noctis 2013 Festival, he will talk about the distinct sense of individuality exhibited by members of the global black metal scene by drawing on a range of interviews with fans, musicians, journalists and record store owners, as well as observations at concerts and festivals around the world and showing how members of the black metal scene create unique identities which value the individual over the group and reject the more communal aspects of other forms of extreme metal such as death metal or thrash metal."

Assistant Professor Ann-Louise Davidson gets interviewed about her research on using mobile technologies with people living with intellectual disabilities. "The way I see the use of technology is not traditional. I don’t advocate for using technologies in a perspective of consumption i.e. sit in front of the Internet and consume GBs or watch TV. I really think that mobile technologies and video production have become so user-friendly that everyone can learn how to use such technologies to serve their purpose, get their message out there, become models for others who need inspiration, feel good about contributing to the Web. This is what I call the emancipatory use of technology."

Public Lecture by Prof. M.J. Jacobson - Beyond Serious Games - May 23, 4pm in LB-571-5

Dr. Jacobson will discuss his team's work over the past two years developing an agent-based virtual environment consisting of an immersive virtual world for experiencing and exploring a complex ecosystem as part of virtual biology fieldwork. The system incorporates predator-prey interactions based on computational biology modeling techniques that are linked to an agent-based modeling tool. He will discuss findings from a recent study in which grade 9 students use the Omosa Virtual World over a two-week period to engage in computational scientific inquiry as they learned about experimental design and a predator-prey ecosystem. Implications of this approach will be discussed as well as plans for new collaborative international research to further develop this computational scientific inquiry approach for learning science (and other subjects) in formal and informal learning environments. New Sounds Symposium first North American edition to held at Concordia University

New Sounds is an international conference for both language researchers and teachers to discuss issues concerning the acquisition of second/foreign language pronunciation (including speech perception and production). The Faculty of Arts and Science and the Department of Education are pleased to bring this exciting event to Concordia University. This three-day event will provide a meeting place for practitioners (language teachers, speech pathologists, materials designers) and theoretical and applied linguists to discuss issues concerning the acquisition of second/foreign language pronunciation. Concordia University's Educational Technology program shines at ISPI Competition

At the closing session of ISPI’s 2013 Performance Improvement Conference, Concordia University was announced as the winner of the 5th Annual ISPI Case Study Competition. This year’s competition included two outstanding teams, Concordia University and the University of New Mexico.

This recognition was the crowning achievement in a journey that began this past January. A team of Master's students in Educational Technology engaged in the competition by forming a core team to take on the role of consultants in a simulation of an authentic consulting engagement with an authentic, but fictitious adventure – retail company, EAES, Inc.

The team would meet weekly with the client played by Matt Donovan (founder and facilitator of the Case Study Competition). Over the course of the next three months, the team analyzed the work, worker, and workplace through a series of employee interviews and collection of organizational data.

After collecting their data, the team submitted a written summary of their findings and recommendations, which they then presented to a panel of judges at the conference. The panel of judges took on the role of an Advisory Board for EAES, Inc., and evaluated each team’s proposal and presentation. This year’s panel of judges had over 110 years of experience and included Roger Addison, Ray Svenson, Anne Apking, and Eileen Banchoff.

The judges acknowledged that both teams were thoughtful, professional, and clearly invested significant time in the experience. After careful consideration, the judges selected Concordia as the winner of the case competition.

This win is a shining moment for the Concordia University Educational Technology program and the students involved. The team demonstrated their excellence and commitment to the field of Human Performance Technology. Congratulations to the students: Ryan Forster, Harry Kavallos, Stefan Krueger, Dahlia Radwan, Robert Leibner, Emily Sheepy, and Fei Shu. Special recognition also goes out to Sonia Di Maulo (faculty sponsor), Davina Davies and Rosanna Montoute, (advanced student support team) and Ann-Louise Davidson and Richard Schmid (faculty supervisors). Book Launch in Celebration of International Adult Learners Week

The Blossoming Roots project succeeded in bringing that wealth of knowledge to life by creating opportunities for the youth to explore that vital link between themselves and the elders, through the medium of oral history. Hourig Attarian is a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Oral History and Digital Story-telling at Concordia University. Her work focuses on storying memory and identity through visual and narrative explorations. Read more

e.Scape Conference - Passion for Technology-Integrated Learning

Course design will be the focus of a workshop at e.SCAPE featuring Joanne Locke, associate-dean, academic programs in the Faculty of Arts and Science, and Anne Wade, manager and information specialist in the Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance. Assistant Professor Venkatesh comments on high volume of responses to lecture vs. classroom technology study

The UA article about his study received nearly 10,000 page views. The article also generated a high volume of online comments – some supportive of the conclusions, but many critical. Venkatesh was invited by UA journalist Léo Charbonneau to respond to some of these comments.
