Workshop: Academic Writing and Peer Review for International Journals

This workshop, presented by Raffaelle Negretti PhD from Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), focuses on academic writing for international publication and will introduce the basicss of genre analysis and rhetorial characteristics of academic publications in specific fields and offer insights on how to prepare a submission and navigate the peer-review process through hands-on exercises, group work and sample texts from participants. CACDA - Corpus-Assisted(Critical) Discourse Analysis Workshop

CACDA allows the digital researcher to carry out rigorous inductive analysis of large volumes of electronically encoded data. This interactive workshop will introducte methods for approaching research in digital environments including an overview of popular digital research methods and methodological considerations and a hands-on CACDA of e-data. Workshop conducted by guests Tieja Thomas PhD (technology and innovation research associate at The Conference Board of Canada) and Vivek Venkatesh PhD (associate professor in Concordia's department of educational technology). Defending the value of daycare workers

Assistant Professor Sandra Chang-Kredl's positions from a paper published in the Journal of Media and Cultural Studies are discussed in an interview with La Presse+. Chang-Kredl talks about how the needs of early childhood educators are rarely at the forefront of public dialogue and proposes that this reality highlights a number of key issues in terms of gender equality and the role of parents versus the role of educators. She suggests that this also explains the shortfalls in terms of remuneration and training and underscores the important role of policy in valuing the work of early childhood educators.

Newest incarnation of Attarian & Yogurtian's Survisor Stories essay

An essay by Hourig Attarian co-written with Hermig Yogurtian several years ago (Survivor stories, surviving narratives) about their encounter with a woman called Pergrouhi and how it triggered other stories in their lives, has now appeared in Turkish translation in an online Turkish Feminist journal titled Feminist Approaches in Culture and Politics. It is amazing how many incarnations this story and this specific essay has had, translated into French, now into Turkish, turned into a play, had several performances by the two authors (example at the Femmes et exils conference in Ottawa in 2003) and has opened up a new dialogue on how to stage difficult memories, started the quest into many other research-creation pieces and still going strong.

Carliner elected Fellow of the Institute for Performance and Learning

On November 19, Professor Saul Carliner was elected a Fellow of the Institute for Performance and Learning (formerly the Canadian Society for Training and Development). This is the highest grade of IPL membership offered in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of training and development over a sustained period of time. Carliner is only the third person in the organization’s 50-year history to have received this honor. The Institute for Performance and Learning has the most successful credentialing program for training and development professionals in North America.

Vivisection of social entrepreneurship

On November 30 from 6pm to 7pm, Ile sans fil founder and CEO of Ajah Michael Lenczner will facilitate the 5th session in the Learning Circle series presented by the Carold Institute in partnership with the Department of Education. This session will critically discuss the practice of social entrepreneurship in the North American context. Lenczner will share his tech entrepreneur story in the nonprofit sector. Discussion topics will range from new approaches to data, to the connection between privilege and entrepreneurship and the distinct practice of social entrepreneurship in Quebec. Free, but spaces are limited.

Concordia partners with the MMFA for education and art therapy program

Exploring the relationship between art and well-being, professors from Concordia University –including Department of Education Professor Miranda D'Amico– are preparing a public series of courses and programs in art education, art history and art therapy, an initiative from the MMFA's new Studios Art & Education Michel de la Chenelière program. Eight projects will be featured from eight Concordia professors including D'Amico's Creative Art Therapies and Education that will focus on autism, presented in collaboration with partners The Miriam Foundation and Fondation Les Petits Rois.

Mediating Sibling Rivarly

A recent study by Assistant Professor Holly Recchia, co-led by graduate students Amandeep Rajput and Stephanie Peccia, has revealed that sibling relations can be somewhat ambivalent, eliciting at times strong feelings at times positive and other times negative. The study further suggests that children raised in family settings with a significant level of conflict tend to more easily ascribe ill will to the behaviours of their siblings during conflict situations. Dr. Recchia suggests that parents acting as mediators, rather than judge and jury, can help children learn conflict-management skills and to help better understand the perspective of the other in conflict situations.

Are we Passing Down our Math Anxiety?

Associate Professor Helena Osana talks to CJAD radio Montreal's Andrew Carter about a new study in the Journal of Psychological Science that suggests that parents with math anxiety can pass these fears down to their kids. Though it's unclear just how the transfer takes place, Osana suggests that developing strategies to manage anxiety and avoid negative messaging about math can help reduce this anxiety transfer.
