Nina Howe restores her father Irving Howe's voice

Nina Howe, Professor in Early Childhood Education and researchers with Concordia's Centre for Research in Human Development, has assembled a collection of her father's essays to revive the prominence once held by this New York intellectual's voice. The algemeiner, the New York Times, and the Times Literary Supplement each offer a review of what this new publication brings after more than half a century of social and political change.

Encouraging Early Childhood Educators to Innovate

Part-time instructor Fiona Rowlands quickly realized that she could impact more people by teaching future educators than by working with children. She spends three mornings a week as the head teacher at the Department of Education's Observational Nursery. "The department has given me a lot of latitude to incorporate my own personal philosophy." Her approach to teaching centres on the importance of free play and movement. Rowlands believes that it's essential to accommodate students who are better at acquiring information when they’re active. Rowlands teaches a course called "Exploring Movement with Children" to undergraduates enrolled in the Early Childhood and Elementary Education program.

Social Media as a Space for Peace - M. Ayaz Naseem reflects on his professorship at Georg Eckert Institute

Associate Professor M. Ayaz Naseem was in Braunschweig, Germany in summer 2013 and summer 2014 as the First Georg Arnhold Research Professor at the venerable Georg Eckert Institute. During his stay, he worked on a book manuscript entitled The Digital Commons and Commoners: Exploring The Potential of Social Media For Sustainable Peace, and a co-edited volume, Peace 2.0: Social Media as a Space for Peace Education (Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, Germany, 2015). The First Arnhold Symposium brought together a diverse group of scholars, practitioners, policy makers and social media analysts interested in how social media can be used in the service of sustainable peace education. The three main themes of the symposium were the conceptualization of social media as a space for peace; explorations of social media as pedagogical intervention; and policy dynamics. Discussion was wide-ranging.

New Dean, New Vision for the Faculty of Arts and Science

Starting August 1, André Roy takes the helm of the Faculty of Arts and Science with a focus on interdisciplinary thinking. "We need a collective definition of who we are, and we need a common ground in terms of how we accomplish our mission," explains Roy, and "listening is key." Roy comes to Concordia from the University of Waterloo where he had been dean of the Faculty of Environment since 2011. Roy was a professor at Université de Montréal from 1982 to 2011. He was chair of the Department of Geography from 1994 to 2000 and the interim chair from 2004 to 2005, as well as associate dean of research in the university’s Faculty of Arts and Science from 2006 to 2008. Dean Roy hopes to maintain his research profile while directing Concordia’s biggest faculty. Roy has published well over 100 papers in international journals, and he remains a very active member of the scientific community.

Recently Published Study about How Siblings Learn from One Another

A new study recently published in the Journal of Cognition and Development by Professor Nina Howe studied how siblings interact in their natural setting: their home. "The extent and what would go on surprised us. While it was sometimes brief, it was sometimes quite extended," she says. "Something else that surprised us was what was being taught," she adds. Older children often like to teach procedural knowledge (i.e. how to build a tower of bricks) but Howe's study found that younger siblings are also asking for conceptual knowledge (i.e. telling the difference between a circle and a square). Howe suggests that uninterrupted playtime between siblings is key for learning.

The study has merited some additional media attention, namely PressNews.org, ScienceXpress, and The Business Standard.

Lifelong Learning Conference Keynote Address by Arpi Hamalian

On August 20, 2014, the McGill Community for Lifelong Learning Conference "Celebrating Lifelong Learning" will feature a keynote address by Concordia Department of Education's own Arpi Hamalian entitled "Learning - A True Treasure Hunt". Associate Professor Hamalian has served as chair of the Department of Education, director of the graduate programs in both Educational Studies and Adult Education,and principal of the Simone de Beauvoir Institute, Concordia’s internationally renowned women’s studies college. The conference celebrates the success of seniors programs in Quebec and offers a forum for organizations invested in fostering lifelong learning.

Kanishka Grant Winners to Develop Curricula that Builds Resilience

Funded to the tune of $172,340 over two years, this multidisciplinary project, led by Associate Professor Vivek Venkatesh, will develop and evaluate curricula and multimedia material specifically targeted towards Canadian youth in elementary, secondary and post-secondary contexts and designed to prevent hate speech inciting violence and violent extremism. Core themes will include digital literacy, the ability to critically assess and question online content, and social cohesion in context of fostering dialogue on divisive subjects. Other researchers involved in the project are Robert McGray, Tieja Thomas, & Jihan Rabah (as PIs), as well as Zeynep Arsel, Adeela Arshad-Ayaz, Juan Carlos Castro, Sandra Chang-Kredl, Sarmista Das, Nicole Fournier-Sylvester, Christopher Moore, Ayaz Naseem, Jeffrey Podoshen, Ketra Schmitt, Kamran Shaikh, Jason Wallin, and Yong Zeng (as Co-PIs).

2nd prize at the Carleton University Development 2014 Conference

Alyssa Scirocco, a student in the MA in Child Studies program, was awarded a second place prize for her paper presentation at the Development 2014 conference held at Carleton University on May 8-9. The title of her talk was "Mother-child conversations about hurting friends and siblings as unique contexts for children's moral development". Alyssa is supervised by Assistant Professor Holly Recchia.

MEGA Brands donates toys to the Doe Observation Nursery

"We thank MEGA Brands for their very generous donation of construction toys, games and puzzles. The kids love them!" says Fiona Rowlands, head teacher at the Observation Nursery. The Observation Nursery is a model school that embeds learning into play — and provides a living lab for student teachers in the Early Childhood Education program. The nursery will expand in 2015, when it moves to new digs on two floors at the Grey Nuns Annex.

Associate Professor Carliner recognized for excellence in teaching

The Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching is awarded to a member of Concordia’s teaching staff who has shown superior knowledge, teaching ability and accessibility to students. Dr. Carliner's teaching has previous been recognized with multiple awards, research grants and fellowships, and he is a member of the Provost’s Circle of Distinction at Concordia. He now adds the 2014 Alumni Awared for Excellence in Teaching to his list of awards.

Assistant Professor Holly Recchia's book on children's moral growth goes viral

Assistant Professor and CRDH researcher Holly E. Recchia, in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Utah, conducted a study on helping children understand moral issues. Their study found that how parents speak with their children about inappropriate behaviour helps to shape their moral growth. Numerous media outlets have featured this research, including Medical News Today, The Health Site, The Times of India, Yahoo! News India, News R, News, Inagist, Wallstreeter and The Free Press Journal.

The article also appears on The New Reddit Journal of Science, Psych Central, Health Canal, Science Newsline Psychology, the Jersey Tribune, The Business Standard, Med Blogs, Health News, Daily Me, Science Daily, Medical Xpress, AMEQ en ligne, and The Municipal Information Network.

Going old school with new digital classrooms is vital

According to PhD candidate Tieja Thomas, "It may seem counterintuitive, but today’s students see traditional lectures as extremely important elements of a good class." Her collegue Jihan Rabah agrees, "Yes, students like technology, and yes, they want it in the classroom — but they still want classical instruction." Both contributed to an article and co-edited the special issue of the International Journal of Technologies in Higher Education based on research by Associate Professor Vivek Venkatesh.

In her 40 years at Concordia, Arpi Hamalian has contributed in numerous ways to the university. She has served as chair of the Department of Education, director of the graduate programs in both Educational Studies and Adult Education, and principal of the Simone de Beauvoir Institute. Arpi talks about teachers who taught her to love learning, women who inspired her, and how women must pay attention to preserving gains made by women, and learn to address structural and systemic barriers.

Grimposium: Trve Kvlt Arts, Films, Sounds and Texts in Extreme Metal

Organised by Vivek Venkatesh (Associate Professor of Eduational Technology), Grimposium is Vivek's ode to the extreme metal scene - a ritual offering to the men and women who define, redefine and stretch the artistic boundaries of what this niche scene has become. Held at the de Sève cinema at Concordia University on April 11 and 12, 2014 and featuring key members of the global extreme metal scene including filmmakers, musicians, journalists, visual artists, authors, creative writers, musicologists and academics. The event will feature film screenings, book launches, panel sessions, art exhibitions and much, much more.

Department of Education is moving to The Faubourg

Scheduled for Spring-Summer 2015, the Department of Education will be relocating to The Faubourg as the transformation and expansion of the R. Howard Webster library gains momentum. Endorsed by a clear majority of the department council, department chair Richard Schmid admits he was hesitant about the space meetings the needs of the department but is pleased at the receptivity and creativity of Facilities Management to address the challenges raised. Schmid also embraces the opportunity for the department to custom design their space.

Women Faculty Summit discusses opportunities for change

Organized by the Office of the Provost, the Summit held on February 14 brought together 40 full- and part-time women faculty to discuss questions such as What is Concordia doing right when it comes to supporting women faculty members? What are some of the challenges? And in the next five years, what changes would women like to see happen? On the topic of gender equality, Department of Education faculty Adeela Arshad-Ayaz commented: "the gender equality project is still far from finished," and added that one of the greatest obstacles women faculty contend with is the false belief they have achieved parity with men. Another summit is planned later this year.

Moving Up! Department of Education rises to Top 100 in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2014

Steadily stepping up yet again from last year's ranking in the Top 150, the Department of Education now boasts of a rank in the Top 100. The QS World University Rankings by Subject are based on several factors including academic reputation, a survey of employers and citations per faculty. Launched in 2011, these rankings are an outgrowth of the QS World University Rankings, published annually since 2004. The expanded version aims to give future students an immediate understanding of which universities perform the best across 30 different subjects. Read more about QS World University Rankings

Concordia Ed Tech alumni and former Vice-Rector, Academic appointed to the Order of Canada

Concordia alumnus and former vice-rector John Daniel has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada — the country’s top civilian honour recognizing outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. His storied career includes 340 publications, such as Mega-Universities and Knowledge Media: Technology Strategies for Higher Education (Kogan Page, 1996) and Mega-Schools, Technology and Teachers: Achieving Education for All (Routledge, 2010). Daniel served as Concordia's vice-rector (academic) from 1980 to 1984 and earned his Masters in Educational Technology at Concordia in 1996. Read more

An Academic Quest into Black and Death Metal

As a young man looking for a philosophy, he discovered that "metal helped transcend racial barriers," explains Associate Professor Vivek Venkatesh about the start of his conflicted love affair with black metal. Years later, Venkatesh sought to explore how communities of metal fans interact in online forums, and how those communities function. "There is empirical data that people form and rationalize arguments in a different way in online forums." Soon enough, Venkatesh began making waves with his thesis, titled From Pride to Prejudice to Shame: Multiple Facets of the Black Metal Scene Within and Without Online Environments. He talks to The Gazette about his background as a lifelong metalhead. Read more
