ELA LESSONS

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS (ELA) LESSONS
THE APPROACH

The goal of the program is to improve students’ evaluating online credibility performance. The improvement will be measured by administering a diagnostic test to the student’s performance over time (pre- and post-test).

The following are some attributes of the designed lessons:

  • The lessons are student-centred, providing students significant opportunities for practicing.
  • Theories and concepts are explained in the context of real-world applications, with various examples on how to apply them.
  • The instructional materials provide high visual content accompanied by the teacher’s notes (verbal explanations).
  • The CORE intervention connects students’ prior knowledge, their own beliefs and experiences and future impacts of their learning.
  • Students will have an opportunity to explore and apply the newly acquired knowledge and skill within an independent project on a topic of their interest.

The CORE program includes 6 lessons covering these topics:

  • Lesson 1 – Understand what makes online information credible.
  • Lesson 2 – Explain how beliefs, values, and experiences influence online evaluation.
  • Lesson 3 – Locate credible online information.
  • Lesson 4 – Use source and context clues to evaluate online information.
  • Lesson 5 – Use content clues to evaluate online information.
  • Lesson 6 – Putting it all together: Synthesize the evidence to evaluate online information.

FILES FORMAT

Every lesson has its own online set of instructional material.

All presentation slides are provided in Google Slides.

THE INDEPENDENT PROJECT

The independent project is to allow students to apply strategies learnt across the CORE program. They will have the opportunity:

  • to identify a topic of their choice
  • to locate articles
  • to evaluate context, content, source
  • to synthesize information
  • to communicate information in a format of their choice.
