Marlise Horst
Dr Horst’s research
uses corpus-informed approaches to explore second language lexical development
in a variety of language learning contexts. In a recent project with
colleagues on the ALERT team, she examined vocabulary use in corpora
of speech produced by ESL learners and teachers. Other funded research
has investigated the usefulness of instruction that raises learners’
awareness of similarities and differences across first and second languages
and the word learning benefits of reading extensively in a second language.
She teaches courses in second language vocabulary acquisition, the history
of English, research methods, and the methodology of ESL teaching. Her
experience in teaching English to speakers of other languages is extensive:
she has taught at universities in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Hong Kong and
Canada.
