Call for Papers

What should my abstract include?
An abstract should situate your work clearly in a specific field (e.g., critical literacy studies, pronunciation pedagogy), provide your specific research questions, and indicate the gap that you are filling with your research. The abstract should be in APA format. You can include references that are absolutely necessary to describe your work, however, for the sake of clarity, please try to keep these to a minimum. Remember, the abstract is how people will judge whether or not to attend your presentation. Because this is an interdisciplinary conference, make it as interesting and as jargon-free as possible to attract a maximum number of attendees! You should identify how your proposal is relevant to the 2014 theme, which is "Reshaping Education: Connections, Communities and Criticality".

What format should my poster be?
The poster should be 3 feet x 4 feet, or 36" by 48".

Is it possible to select a presentation time?
No, unfortunately due to organisational constraints, you must be available to present and attend for the duration of the conference.

What if I submit a proposal and decide to change it?
Remember, the abstract you submit should be complete and accurate. However, if there is a major change that must be made before the event, please contact the organizers via symposium@education.concordia.ca

Does my research have to completed in order to submit a proposal?
No. Proposals with in progress research are acceptable.

What if I submit a proposal and then decide I can't attend the conference?
Please inform the conference organizers at the earliest possible date via symposium@education.concordia.ca

What audiovisual capabilities will there be? Do I have to bring my own computer?
A laptop will provided in each presentation room. Please bring a USB key with your presentation as well as a backup format (email, dropbox, etc.). We would prefer you to use our audiovisual equipment rather than bringing your own. There will be speakers available as well as an internet connection.

When will I know if my submission has been accepted?
We will inform all applicants by email in March.

When will I will know my presentation time?
Your allotted presentation time will be sent to you by email in March. We would like to remind you that you are strongly encouraged to attend the conference in its entirety.

How can I indicate my participation at GSDE in my CV?
Each presenter and/or volunteer will be given a certificate of recognition proving their participation as a presenter and/or volunteer at the conference. Certificates of recognition will be distributed at the conference registration table.

How can I volunteer to help at GSDE?
Each year GSDE needs a number of volunteers to ensure the smooth running of the conference. We are looking for students willing to act as moderators for presentations, to help with registration, to participate in set-up and clean-up, as well as to provide technical assistance. We will be looking to recruit volunteers approximately one month before the event. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact symposium@education.concordia.ca.

Is there funding available for the conference? How about accommodation?
As this is a student-run conference, we are unable to provide accommodation or funding for presenters. However, many universities provide graduate students with funding opportunities which you may be eligible for.

What is the role of the moderator?
The moderator will act as a timekeeper and facilitate the 5 minute discussion following each presentation. All moderators will be provided with a set of guidelines at a volunteer orientation.

Will there be an opportunity to test my virtual presentation before GSDE?
Yes, a member of the GSDE tech team will contact you to make arrangements one week prior to the symposium.

Will I be able to share my presentation with conference attendees?
You may upload your presentation to SlideShare if you would like to share it with fellow conference attendees.

Do I have to register?
All participants, presenters, volunteers and audience members must register online for the conference, as lunch will be provided for all registered participants.

Can I submit my abstract and present in French?
Oui! Vous pouvez donner votre communication en francais.
